Anna Kell’s work is an investigation into the various ways that culture mediates our nature. In her Nursing Drawings series, Kell draws from observation, looking down, while her son nurses. The drawings not only document what she considers one of the least mediated, sweetest, and most challenging experiences in her life, but they also make visible (when seen in a large group) some fraction of the time and energy that goes into being a mother.Kell has exhibited her drawings, paintings, and installations internationally, and you can see current work on exhibit this spring at The Gateway Project in Newark’s Penn Station concourse and at her solo exhibition at The Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster, NJ. She is currently Assistant Professor at Bucknell University, where she teaches painting and drawing.
