In St. Petersburg is MoM’s Escape the Womb experience—an interactive, educational installation that transforms learning about birth, reproduction, and maternal health into a playful, immersive environment. Designed to spark curiosity, conversation, and critical thinking, the Escape the Womb invites participants to solve challenges while engaging with real-world topics related to reproductive education, bodily autonomy, and caregiving. The experience reflects MoM’s commitment to making complex subjects approachable, inclusive, and memorable through hands-on learning.

In March, MoM will host its Annual International Academic Conference at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg campus—an educational milestone grounded in more than 20 years of international scholarship and public discourse. Since its inception, the conference has convened artists, scholars, caregivers (continued)

birth workers, healthcare professionals, and policy thinkers from around the world to examine motherhood through interdisciplinary, research-based perspectives.

“We are incredibly grateful to have a home for this conference at USF St. Pete,” said Joy Rose, MoM founder. “For more than two decades, this gathering has functioned as an educational forum for critical inquiry into caregiving, equity, labor, health, and cultural expression. Hosting it here allows us to share that knowledge directly with our local community while remaining globally engaged.”

The 2026 MoM Conference will feature panels and presentations focused on reproductive identities, maternal experiences, and the intersections of motherhood with art, policy, healthcare, education, and social justice. Offered both in person and online, the conference is designed to be academically rigorous while remaining accessible to students, professionals, and community members alike.

Beyond the conference, the Museum of Motherhood hosts educational events year-round, creating ongoing opportunities for residents and visitors to engage with contemporary issues through learning, dialogue, and community collaboration. A full calendar of events is available online: https://mommuseum.org/events-2.

Emmy Award-Winning Documentarian Brings Global “Viejas Glorias” Project to St. Petersburg—Celebrating the Power and Beauty of Women Aging

St. Petersburg, FL — [October 24, 2025] — St. Petersburg selected as U.S. kickoff city for groundbreaking international documentary series challenging how society views aging women!

A woman stands on a lift holding a paintbrush, showcasing the Viejas Glorias film project, with a bright blue sky in the background.

Spanish artist and muralist Marina Capdevila is bringing her internationally acclaimed Viejas Glorias (Glorious Old Women) project to the historic Princess Martha in St. Petersburg as part of a five-city global documentary series. St. Petersburg has been selected as the U.S. launch city, joining host cities in China, Spain, Peru, and Ghana in a transformative exploration of how women—particularly mothers and grandmothers—are perceived as they age.

The Viejas Glorias project challenges deeply ingrained cultural narratives about aging by celebrating the wisdom, resilience, humor, and beauty that come with lived experience. Through intimate interviews, large-scale public murals, and cinematic storytelling, Capdevila and her Emmy Award-winning documentary team are creating a powerful counter-narrative that positions elderly women not as invisible or diminished, but as vessels of strength, cultural memory, and irreplaceable knowledge.

“At a time when our world faces profound social and environmental challenges, we need the perspective that only comes with age,” says Capdevila. “These women have lived through wars, raised families, survived losses, and adapted to unimaginable change. Their stories deserve to be monumental—literally painted on our walls and woven into our collective consciousness.”

Why St. Petersburg?

St. Petersburg’s selection as the U.S. kickoff city reinforces its growing international reputation as a leader in public art and progressive cultural dialogue. The project’s alignment with the city’s vibrant mural scene—including Capdevila’s previous work at the 2022 SHINE Mural Festival and the Dali Museum’s 2025 Outside In exhibition—makes it an ideal location to launch this important conversation.

The Museum of Motherhood (MoM), Tampa Bay’s first and only women’s museum, has joined as fiscal sponsor for the project, recognizing the profound synergy between Viejas Glorias and MoM’s mission to celebrate and amplify women’s voices, particularly those of mothers whose contributions are often overlooked or undervalued. All donations are tax-deductible through MoM’s 501(c)(3) status.

A Documentary with Global Impact

The documentary series, directed by an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Diane Larrea, will capture Capdevila’s creative process alongside intimate portraits of the women who inspire her work. A pilot episode filmed in Spain is currently available on Amazon Prime and Apple TV in Europe. The St. Petersburg episode will showcase local mothers and grandmothers whose stories reflect the universal themes of resilience, adaptation, and the privilege of growing old.

How You Can Help

The project requires $30,000 by December 1, 2025, to cover artist materials, labor, and the professional film crew’s travel and production costs. In these uncertain times, when many are navigating financial challenges, every contribution—large or small—makes a meaningful difference in ensuring this important story is told. Limited exclusive sponsorship opportunities are available at various levels.

This is more than a mural project—it’s a movement to reshape how we see and value women as they age. It’s an opportunity to position St. Petersburg on the international stage as a city that champions inclusive representation and celebrates the fullness of women’s lives.

There is something for everyone here.”

The museum’s reopening celebration will highlight its newest visitor experience, an escape room adventure aptly named MoM’s Escape Womb.
